I borrowed my son's lens and tripod to go play in the backyard this afternoon. It works so much better when you have good equipment. I usually shoot with a basic low end tripod and a ball head. Using Joel's Wimberly & carbon fiber tripod makes is so much easier... and sharper!!!

Here is a picture of a juvenile Rose Breasted Grosbeak. The background is a little distracting to my taste.

Rene....I disagree. I love the BG. You might want to try a little bit NR on the BG. beautiful capture. You have captured the softness of the breast and belly feathers very successfully.

I like the background too! I'd love to have made this photo. The bird seems a bit soft, was this cropped much? The fill flash is unobtrusive here, it's not over-done to my taste.

Very nice Rene, doesn't look soft to me at all, love the lighting, maybe a bit more room at the tail, I'm surprised how good the sigma is with a 1.4. What body?

I like the BG as well, the bird really stands out. Looks sharp to me as well, especially the eye and the detail in the chest feathers. Very nice photo.

    Art,
The original picture is very sharp. I do not sharpen much in PS. The camera is a Nikon D200 (1.5 crop factor). The 120-300 f/2.8 is a very sharp lens. With the 1.4X, I loose some focusing speed but image quality is still extremely good. With a 2X, we see more softness and texture.
