I found these two beautiful avocets, and others, frolicking (I think playfully) this morning.I liked the looks of the action and the water droplets. I thought of cropping the image square, and probably should have? And is the exposure right (light enough)? All comments are appreciated.
Hi Wendell - Black and white birds are really tough except in soft light - which would have been the key here = whilst you whites are in check - the image lacks a little contrast, adding contrast is going to push those white a little more.
Did a slight S curve adjustment to add a little contrast - Added a multiply layer to reduce the whites a little (still not over but look bright) added some sharpening and cropped.
Like the landing pose and the water drops are cool.
Biggest tip I can give you is --- get lower when ever you can - I am always laying in something or another - it will really transform your shots.
Great re post Lance !! The extra room on the left works for for showing the water drops Sure wish I had more on the right like it as presented ! Exposure wise you did well, those birds are difficult to expose .... blow out easy !!!
Hi Wendell, your exposure looks good to me and the water drops really add interest. I would boost the red saturation just a bit. IMO I think if you crop the bottom to just above the reflection (while it's a very nice reflection it detracts from the main event) the perspective changes and you lose that sense of looking down at the action. Nice capture!
Katie, yes! I did a sample print with the crop you suggested. That along, with Lance's crop suggestion, changed the image presentation dramatically, and for the better in my eyes too. But I don't see an improvement with the red saturation you recommend. Maybe I'm simply doing it wrong. Could you elaborate, please . . .
