Default Red-winged Blackbird Mobbing a Great Blue

We were by the Lachine Rapids off the Island of Montreal, when I spotted a Great Blue Heron coming in for a landing. Just as it was coming down, a male Red-winged Blackbird appeared and started mobbing the Heron. I have a series of 5 or 6 shots, but attached is the first. The Blackbird took several swoops at the Heron for about 2 or 3 minutes, and then the Heron took off for more friendly locales.

I have read that Herons will eat voles, but would they pose a threat to Red wings? Nests would be close to the water's edge, so I suppose the eggs/offspring would be accessible.

they are a threat to everything --they go after ducklings so I would say yes

Nice one James. I agree, Great Blue Herons eat pretty well anything. There was a memorable BPN post last year of a GBHE eating a rail chick (was it a coot, moorhen, I can't remember).
