Here's another image from my photo shoot of the woodpecker nest in my neighborhood, this time of the adult female. Their tongues are serrated?!

Yes with little hooks, velcro-like to be able to pick up the grubs etc. down from the holes they drill.
Some birds that don't have such specialized tongues use sticks instead:eek:

Very nice image I really like the tongue capture, also like the tree.
The forehead is a bit overexposed, did you eliminate the red highlights in ACR?

    Love it Erich

Agree with Ilija ... can add I would take out the band by the upper left and crop out the one up top !!! Fine image and great timing !!!

    Hi Erich,
I like this capture...love the open bill and the peek-a-boo pose...agree on eliminating the two white bands on the upper left hand corner of your frame...my eyes keep going there...looking forward to your next one...

    Ilija,

No, didn't touch the woody's forehead or do anything to the red highlights. What's ACR?

    Thanks all for the compliments!

Adobe Camera Raw is a Photoshop (PS) plug-in that handles most camera digital formats.
If you have overexposed red highlights you can recover them in ACR.
The recovery slide will shift the histogram to the left and possibly eliminate the red highlights.
If you have PS you should have ACR too. A raw format should open in ACR by default.

    I hope this helps.

Like the pose and the open beak with the tongue so well visible.
    Techs covered above.

Erich, I like that you have an unusual behavior image here and the exposure and detail look good to me. Thanks for posting, I learned something new!
