A pair of clownfish with anemone from Guadalcanal. These are the ones I would love to go back with a digital camera !! During a dive you only have 35 usable exposures so bracketing is wasteful and very little of the film was actually developed about the boat .. only the firs few to make sure all was working !!! Nikonos 111 15mm UW Nikkor Ikelite 150 Strobe.

    Comments welcome and much appreciated

I'm not that familiar with the days of film (giving away my age), and know even less about underwater togging, but to my eye the colours in this looks sweet, and lighting was used to good effect.

    Nice image Al.

The underwater threads today have me looking for my old three stage - double hose regulator and weight belt! :D Just not sure if I could carry the 20# of dead weights anymore. :(

Hi Morkel. Read my prior post, on the joys of the old Kodachome 25, to get an idea of the age of some of us here! ;)

Hi Alfred, Another nice colour combo of fish and anemone...the whites are definitely hot in the original scan, the cloned repost is better, but I think the nose of the front fish is still a bit hot. You must have been right on top of them with a 15mm, so the strobe would have been pretty close too!! You must have been using manual flash (I don't recall when TTL flash made it's debut UW).

    Cheers!

    Hi Bruce

The lens was just over a foot away, I just point .. never even use the auxiliary finder. The strobe is on a short arm which detaches and I hold with my left hand usually up/left form subject. I do move the strobe in and out to fine tune my flash exposure. Had three power settings which corresponded to f 11, 8 and 5.6 at three feet for ISO 100 film .... fun days !!!! :)

Oh yeah those days! I love the comp and fish. Very cute creatures! The repost with toned down whites is much better. Do you find that scanned slides need only a little (if any) saturation?

Thanks for sharing. I've been pulling out my scans too. :) This is great!

Can't remember the name right now, though I still have it here someplace in a box. Had to give it up as I broke the hose and couldn't get a replacement. One negative that was a nice feature was the staging. Until the tank was empty, it was easier to breath than breathing above water. But when you were empty, you knew it! One attempt at getting a breath and up you go!!! :( Got caught a couple of times on the bottom of the tank. Luckily I was also in shallow water.

    Hi Mark .......

    "I remember when ............."

I too started with a huge double hose regulator in 1957 . I have been diving for 52 years!

Al, love the image - if we keep this up you might need a UW forum - just kidding!!

Keep 'em coming; I will too; they are a treat.

Thanks Al. I no longer have a scanner, the bank manager would not let me buy one, so I use a lightbox and my 100mm macro tripod mounted to capture them digitally. It works OK I suppose. :(

Akos there is a scanning service that might work just fine Sent seven hundred to be scanned ... let you know how it goes. Inexpensive and they upload images for viewing prior to scanning, can delete up to half of the order !!

Thanks Al. I just had about that many returned from a publisher, who apparently has included some in his upcoming hard cover Underwater invertebrates of the world guide. So I am aching to see the product. Even one image would be simply awesome.

Very nice image, Al. Brings back a lot of memories. Back throughout the '80s and half the 90's Gail and I were avid divers. Every year we would take a week and dive 3-4 dives a day. We shot with a Nikonos IVa, SB 101 strobe and used Ektachrome 100. We had local processing so we could see how we were doing. Yup! 35 images a dive! Wow, the divers today with digital don't know how good they have it.

:D Stay under your bubbles and use lots of talc to pull on the two-sided neoprene suits

Al, it there was a UW forum, the Fine Art folks might stamp their feet  . Remember, we just had that discussion over in Landscape ;)

If we leave it this way you can have two bites of the apple in 24 hours. Remember, I got my thread slapped :o by Fabs for posting more than one image in the same thread/forum.

The way it is now we can post a macro UW in the Macro Forum, and a larger UW critter in the Wildlife/Critters Forum. Si?

    Cheers Mate,
