    Question Hawk or Immature Eagle?

 I recently inherited a bird mount from my deceased father. Growing up I always knew it as a hawk. Now that I am grown and have the bird in my posession people that have seen it insist that it is not a hawk. Many believe that it is an immature eagle. This mount 75 or 80 years old, and I am told that it may not be legal to possess this mount. I would like to identify it but I am afraid that it will be confiscated. Who can I contact to assist me?

There was no need for a permit when that bird was mounted so I presume it would be grandfathered as a no permit bird when the laws requiring permits came into being. I would contact your local game and fish department and ask them and you can apply for a permit if they require you to do so.
Looking at your avatar I would think this is a young bald eagle.

I am sure you are probably correct on the grandfathering issue.....but they may require some type of proof as to when it was mounted. I do know they can get you for even picking up eagle feathers off the ground, unless you are Native American and they are used in Religious ceremonies.

Bill, that's true but they are very good in responding to legitimate requests. Just look at all the cowboys on the circuit who have eagle and redtail feathers in their hats.:) They also have a depository for eagle and hawk feathers that are available for native americans, again for legitimate purposes, there are a lot of falconers and breeders who donate feathers to this cause. I believe they also allow one tribe to capture a wild golden and use it in a ceremony. The eagle is released after the ceremony.

Yes I have in the past raised African Greys and Green-winged Macaws and we used to save our feathers and donated them to a tribe in New Mexico. Remember when Hillary Clinton was given the Dreamcatcher. They can and will come after you.

    Default Eagle/Hawk Update

I contacted the Dept of Nat Reaources here in Illinois and found out that due to it's age I do not need to have any legal documentation. I am assuming that it was mounted in the early 1930's so there's no documentation in existance as far as I know. I have also sent pics to them for identification purposes. Thanks for your input, and Roy - I am also e-mailing pics to you for your opinion.

You're welcome, and it's good news you get to keep the bird in the family. I'll be waiting for the pics.
