I think I would have cropped it as you did. I like the interaction, details and BG. It looks as if there is a red cast, maybe lowering the color temperature would be an option. I would also tone down the perch.

Your crop is perfect, great interaction between the two and the feet grabbing the stick are great. I do find the vertical part of the perch to be a bit bright, really like the peach colored, smooth background.

I like the original crop better, Manos, maybe a slice off the right. I feel showing the wing balances the other bird nicely.
