It was pretty hazy this morning and I was standing above this guy; however, I was pleased to catch him with his food. Minimally adjusted (WB, NR, USM) but cropped 50%. Do the scattered hot whites on its back detract? Should I correct? And, though the color of the bird is what I think I saw, do I need more contrast -- richness?
Hi Wendell - Like the action - caught him having his breakfast.
The whites are not over by much - could easily recover - dont think you need any more contrast. Would tone down those blues in the water a little - they are a bit electric for my tastes.
Might also give it a bit of a Pano crop making sure to leave room for the virtual feet.
Would have liked to see a lower shooting angle.
Keep em coming :)
Lance and Gus, 'preciate your critiques. And points well taken re. the "electric" blue water and the pano crop. Funny how my concerns (hot whites and contrast) are not the major problems. When these things are pointed out to me I see them clearly, saying to myself, "Of course." Obviously my photographic/artistic eye needs further sharpening.
Hi Wendell, Good catch and for me, its not the blue water that stands out, it's the bright pink in the beak but maybe it's my monitor since no one else has mentioned it?? I like the pose and I agree that the colors in the body look right.
Alfred and Katie: I went back into the history of my adjustments in Lightroom and found I had tweaked vibrance and saturation along the way -- and did not mention that I had done that in my post. I had even forgotten that I did it, but the history panel does not lie, so I'm glad your comments caused me to re-check the steps. I was obviously too heavy-handed (guess I had my mind set on getting contrast into the bird's feathers). Your critiques were very helpful. Thanks . . .
