    Default Skimmer Minimalism

I photographed this skimmer on Long Island this morning. He was actually drinking since this is a puddle because of all the rain in recent days.

Love the simplicity and the soft light. Did you need to lighten this in post? EXP settings seem dark for a MIII. Man, I keep hearing about those rain puddles...

Thanks, Artie! The exposure was pretty much right out of the camera. I was surprised, too, that I didn't have to dial in more positive EC. I made it around 7 AM, an hour and a half after sunrise. I only brightened the blacks a little.

I love the lines and image design. Here's another version, no better, no worse, another version, what I'd do if this were mine. Color control point in Viveza.

Very nice Axel, simple and moving all in one. Thanks for sharing. What I do like is that faint catchlight just enough to see the eye.

I like your repost! I don't have this plugin, what does it do?

It's Nikon's control point technique. You select a point in the image, make it as big as you want it, then make it lighter or darker or change the hue. Great for giving color to white skies. I'm sure you can download a free trial of Viveza from Nik software.
Glad you liked it. As a matter of fact, I was very tempted to make it high key, but controlled myself :D

    Hi Axel,
Love the simplicity of the image and the cool reflection! I think i would go for Fabs repost, because I think there was some reddish cast to your original post especially in the water. In Fabs repost the water looks a bit more natural and the bird pops better. Excellent shot nonetheless!

Your comp works well, and how calm is that water. Great to see the catchlight against the dark plumage. Im glad he was drinking, as he aint gonna catch any fish in a puddle. Super capture Axel.

Love the comp Axel, works very well.
High key as per Fabs would be interesting I think.
Works well just as posted though.

Both work for me as well, the simple but compelling composition is fantastic. I wish it were in my collection, well done.
