Beautiful subject Dave. Love the details on feathers and eye. Can we determine the age by examining the bill?

JC, the bird is a juvie based on the feathering. Hard to believe that the bill can become such a mess at such a young age. It needed a bath. Sharp with nice light--the face looks spotlit.

Love the intense stare. The orange of the morning sun looks good on the bird. I'd add a sliver of canvas up top.

Dave, super close up showing good sharp detail. Lovely warm colours from the sweet light. A liitle more space left and top will work.

I like the tight crop, light, details and BG and might clean the bill a little.

Thank you all for comments/suggestion.....the light here was unique
in that it was very strong and coming between tall trees to my left.
It was an in between the trees shaft that had just illuminated the heron.

Axel, I likely should clean that bill a bit. For a juvenile it looks so old and well used!!

Hi Dave. I have a few observations. I do like the composition, however to me, at least, there seems to be a noise problem. I think ISO 800 might have been a too high. You could have gotten by with less than F8, but mainly you could have used a lower shutter speed, and ISO 400 or lower would have worked. I realize that you aren't too familiar with the bird. One of the night herons characteristics is that they will remain motionless until they basically see the movement of lets say, a photographer. It is one of their survival MOs; don't move, you won't get noticed. If you got as close as you did, shutter speed can be quite low, as long as you keep your camera steady(as you did).
