As common as these birds are, I still find them tough to get a nice perched shot.
This perch was set up near a feeder. Taken yesterday.

Wonderful calling pose, and soft light. I like the berries, but not the weeds in the BG. The BG is a little too light for my tastes.
The Scrub Jays around here are not as hard to get on a nice perch. They sure scare off all the little birds though.

Hey Alan,
Always enjoy your take on bird photography. Maybe a little heavy on the habitat in this one. When you visualize a set for bird photography is your main effort to produce a "wall hanger" or a clean commercial shot?
Rob................
Alan..I am big fan of birds-in-habitat shots. So I personally dont mind a few distractions in the BG if they are natural. I liked this shot because of the composition, the head angle and the open beak.
It looks a tad overexposed to me.
Alan,
Works perfect for me ! No nits.
Love the image Murph !!!!
Must be tough to pull off since there are different places he can land !!! Big Congrats !!!!
Great expression, I like the berries. I agree, its tough to get clean photos of these guys.
Rob, good question. I do have a vision of how I want a certain species to look before I leave the house, so I shoot for that vision, so I guess "wall hanger" would be the answer. Most of my work is the "clean" shot, but that is not necessarily the most "commercial". Most buyers like a bit more habitat IMO.
I think the OOF vegitation here adds depth. I'd like to add more of that in my work but would probably want the same species of plant as my perch. Nice pose. More DOF is always good but probably not possible here.
