I went through some files from last year and came up with this burrowing owl that I photographed in Florida last spring. I'm wondering if the grassy setting works for you.

Perfect focus on the eyes - grass works fine for me apart from the pale green stem cutting across the left upper corner.

Axel:
The eyes are so riveting in this one that the grass is hardly seen, at least initially. It shows their habitat while still concentrating on the bird. Works for me.

Axel, the grass setting works well, helped even further by the (relatively) slow SS. I'm guessing some light wind created the nice effect. The staring eyes are just perfect. Was the sky overcast at the time?

Super eye contact and well captured hiding between the grass.

You nailed it again man. This is very nicely presented. Those eyes are rippers. :)
you certainly nailed it - those eyes are gorgeous and low angle takes this over the top. grass fine since it's the natural environment.
wow this is supermodel. what an eye. to me having a good owl image is ++++. dont bother to check anything when i see an owl. TFS
I like both the grasses (see exception below) and the nestled down look, and of course the eyes. There are about four or five thicker light yellowish brown left side and lower left that grab my eye. It would be a lot of work to lose them.

Really enjoy this image Axel! Love the intimate feel to this - OOF grass does not bother me.
Just love those eyes! Super light!
Brilliant close up, and he looks like he is frowning at you. The head is sharp, and those eyes are haunting. This is different from the norm, and his surroundings work for me. Well captured Axel.
