    Default Expected Arrival

While I am thinking going back to Bonaventure Island for northern gannet shooting, I went through my shots done during the workshop I had attended with Chris Dodds.

I am not too sure about the position of the landing gannet; too centered or not. What do you think?

    Colors corrected

I agree with Kiran about the head turn but other than that, the image works very well for me. I am not sure about the out of focus birds in the far BG. I think that they are distracting. In a perfect world, a lower shooting angle would help to isolate the fantastic action of the bird iflight and the ones in the FG . I like this image a lot!
Please, can you post the technical details of the image? ;-)

    Juan,

you are right about the background horizon, but lower than where I was, I would have need a shovel to dig myself a trench. The background landscape was going up so that is why we see a background horizon. I was debating to level on the background horizon instead of on the foreground birds.

A very nice image, lovely soft colors, sky compliments the blue in the gannets.
re: centering - I am Ok with it, because there is so much greater distance in front of the bird than to the rear.
You could crop in to the base of the neck (outside edge) of the bird on the lower left hand corner, but again, I am OK with it as is.

Leveling the horizon is going to cause some significant cropping, unless this is already a crop with room to spare in the original.

    HA mentioned.

    Cheers

very beautiful bird and looks like tuff to capture with so much of white area. but you done it very well.
agree with oof bg birds and the horizon level.

I would not go for lower angle cuz i think that could have increase the height of oof birds in bg and disturbed the main character so for me this is just fine.

btw giving 30% transparency to your signature can be a good point as it becomes the entire frames point of attraction.

The bird's position in the frame is fine, it's the landing away from us that is too bad. I am also OK with the OOF birds as this gives an idea of the sizeable colony this was photographed at.

I like the interaction, details and pose and agree with Daniel that it would have been great with the gannet angling towards you.

Yes....well, next time I will ORDER them to pose the way I want ;)

Here a revised version with the background horizon leveled and a more discreet signature,

    Thanks for the feedback all.

The leveled horizon makes a big difference. I'm sure the gannet flight control will be happy to assist you. :)

To dig a trench for a lower angle is too much work :) thanks for the aditional information and I like the repost with a more discrete signature.

You have leveled the horizon in the second version but just having returned from there I know that the colony doesn't have any level horizons! I like the OOF birds in the background as that is just how it really is. So, this is a compromise. It makes a better picture but isn't what the colony really looks like!

    Nicely done, either way!

    Thank you Eleonor,

Maybe, I say maybe the obsession of being by the rules may not be respectful of the reality. That is why you can still see the original version with the real horizon.

Regards and thanks to all for the exchange,
