This is FF and I tried a vertical crop but preferred leaving a horizontal composition.

Darren, super calling pose, and I really like the overall colours in this, both on the yellowthroat, and the BG. Well exposed, especially around the eye. If this were mine, I would create a vertical crop, and add space on top, and move him to the left a bit.
Such a beauty... loved the pose and a beautiful looking subject.. I more vote for more room on top.
well as said above this is a fantastic shot and my vote goes to horizontal frame but move the bird to left and some room at top.
I agree it needs more room. I see it is FF...would you have had time to remove the TC? You got a terrific calling pose, and a wonderful BG, not to mention very sweet light :-)
I have hundreds of photos of these guys just as you mentioned, as I already said I preferred this one horizontal. :)

Great light, pose and BG. You could probably add canvas since the BG is very clean.
Darren, beautiful image. loved the BG.
Can you elaborate on why you preferred the horizontal? other than the fact that you have many verticals. I like to read self-critiques and it helps me learn. One reason I come to this site often.
Kaustubh, I like to process all my RAW files with Canon's "Digital Photo Professional" software. When I crop an image I like to keep it at a aspect ratio, for example a horizontal image would be 4:3, 3:2. For vertical perhaps 2:3, 3:4 or 4When I cropped at the vertical aspect I found the crop was too tight.
Granted I could easily add canvas and change it to any aspect ratio. Instead I opted to leave it at full frame (FF) and show the out of focus (OOF) background (BG)
BTW I cloned out a reed I didn't like, can you tell where it was?

No..I cant tell where the reed would have been.
Its a very beautiful picture, very sharp and excellent pose. Like others I too feel for Vertical crop. If its been my picture I would have added for more space at the top and did a vertical crop. I guess adding/cropping a canvas is permissible in most of the contests while clonning is not allowed.
So still its fine without having any guilt pangs :-).
