I like the idea of the crop but find the light too harsh for this. The underparts look underexposed while the rim is quite bright. I would try this in lower light and dial in positive EC.
Exposure Compensation. This is when you tell your camera to let in either more, or less, light than what it's meter thinks is a perfect exposure. Camera meters are quite "dumb" in lots of situations and need to be dealt with by the camera operator (you). Hence the use of "Exposure Compensation". If you are not certain about exposure, the very best gifts you can make yourself are "The Art of Bird Photography" and "The Art of Bird Photography II".
You do look like you know how to pan and track a flying bird, as the image is quite sharp.
