Default Printing Paper Recommendations for R1900

I purchased an Epson R1900 a short while back and love it. So far I haven't had any problems and the color output is beautiful.

I started with some Epson Premium Photo Paper Glossy as I use a medium grade paper to make greeting cards and I wanted to test the gloss print characteristics of the printer.

I am now looking to explore a luster or semi-gloss surface. Ultra Premium Luster was recommended by another member though I didn't particularly like the slightly cyan or green cast to the whites with the Premium Photo Glossy (I'm using Epson's premium icc profiles). I'm not sure if the Epson luster paper has the same cast. I purchased a sampler pack from Red River and liked their Arctic Polar Luster (cold whites) as well as the Premium Polar Luster (warmer whites, similar to Ilford Galerie).

Does anyone have any favorite brand and surface of paper that you would like to recommend to be used in framing behind glass? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Try Red River Artic Polar Satin. I love it and it has become my number one paper! I also use the profiles downloaded from the Red River site.

Red River as Ed suggests is great. I am partial to Moab Entrada (Kayenta - same except lighter base and less expensive). Both are matte but render detail excellently.

Hi Richard, I asked the same question a while ago and someone recommended Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 320gsm. I have tried it and I really like it. It is archival quality.

Ed - I have a sample of the Polar Satin that I haven't tried. I'll give it a go later in the week.

Robert - I was wondering about the amount of detail that would be rendered in a matte surface... thanks for including your observations. Were you referring to the bright white or natural? I see they have a sampler package so I'll probably order one.

Jackie - thanks for your recommendation. The Hahnemuhle website didn't offer a sampler package though Atlex.com did (same place I purchased my printer). Were you referring to 308 as I couldn't find 320. There is also Photo Rag ultra smooth 305 and Photo Rag bright white 310.

Sorry Richard, think it was the 308.

Richard i do not get any cast with the Ultra Premium Luster Epson paper and my R1900. I have not used their glossy because I prefer a luster surface to a full glossy surface. I really love the results. I have them framed in my art show booth.

    Nancy,

Thanks for sharing your observations as I was concerned that what I was seeing with the Premium Photo Paper Glossy might be a characteristic of some of the other Epson papers.

Something else that may be of interest to others -- the R2880 (4 types of black ink) is better suited for B&W than the R1900 (2 types of black ink) due to a slight color cast created by the R1900. I came across a review that claims that Ilford Galerie Gold Fibre Silk paper neutralizes this cast. I haven't tried it myself though I thought I'd pass the information along.

I'm the same as the rest of the pack...Red River polar and arctic polar both in a satin/lustre finish...I really like the results it gives me.

I've fallen in love with Gold Fibre Silk from Ilford.
