Super sharp with great eye contact. I like the fluffed up feathers and the partially open wings. The bird feels cramped in the frame. I would tone down the perch and perhaps desat the sky just a little.
Kobus, that is one interesting bird. Tail is so short it doesn't show?
He seems to be ready to open the wings to warm up or kill bugs. Love the head turn and feather detail.
Agree on desaturating the sky and adding room all around.
I am curious as the -1/3 exposure compensation. Is this full frame, meaning, bird big enough in the frame to grant the closing of the lens, given he is on a steep angle?
Thx Doug and Fabs appreciate it. Doug i have desat the blues. but must add that it was not sat so must in the first one. African Sky sometimes very blue :D
Fabs the are known for the small tails. Adults are awesome. Yes you are right he was getting ready to warm up.
Second image an adult. Third image is the warm up. No 4 is a JUV in flight to show you small tail (Adults tail the same).
PS. please note that i did not do much to the last 3 shots. Was just to show all what they look like. :D

Its amazing how they transform from a bland Juv to a very colourful adult. Stunning light, sharp, and love the head turn. I would maybe tone down the perch a tad.
what a fantastic collection you have here kobus.
i am so involved in your images that i couldnt find any issues because raprtors are what i like most and i do like to work on.
Big Congrats on having them in such close range which is really hard for raptors atleast for us in india.
super shot Kobus! love the pose and exposure. love these raptors. nothing wrong with sky - true African blue. like the one with a tad extra space more.
I love this series Kubos!
My favorite is the first on but as mentioned above with less sat on the sky, in the second repost the sky is fine but the bird is too bright. The extra room on right really helps the composition. I would like to see this image larger since is looks too small for showing such lovely bird.
I don't mind the sky, our Aussie skies are so blue too. Love the eye contact (first image). All good from me mate. The juvenile to adult transition is similar to our White-bellied Sea Eagles as their juveniles start our pretty much brown allover, then over a number of years develop their typical B&W adult look. They are very, very hard subjects to shoot in most areas as their fear of mankind is particularly strong.
Fabs at one time there was an attempt, as taxonomist like to do, to rename it "Short Tailed Eagle" there was such an outcry from ornithologist and lay people that they stuck to Bateleur.
