    Default NANPA Insurance

Hi, for those either uninsured or insured through their homeowners:

Regarding my NANPA sponsored policy, I wrote to the person that handles the policy and changes for the Rand Insurance, the brokerage company, regarding whether to list my computer at this time or whether to wait until I am ready to leave on a trip I am taking to South American in October. The computer is currently covered by a Dell premium warranty.

    Rand wrote:

That’s up to you. You can add them now or wait until you are ready to leave on your trip. Although they are covered under warranty, they may not be covered for accidental damage, as they would be on your insurance policy.
The importance of this statement is that your homeowner's policy only covers fire and theft; the NANPA policy covers accidental damage, e.g., a cup of coffee over the keyboard or you camera/lens falling to the ground and becoming pieces in the process.

As always, most but not all of the time, you get what you pay for.

The NANPA rate is 2.3% of declared value with a minimum of $350 which equates to approximately $15,000 equipment coverage. Depending upon your gear it doesn't take too long to reach $15,000 between bodies, lenses, computers, and printers!

Thanks for that comment, Al. I feel badly that while I have participated in the informational side of BPN I haven't had the opportunity to do much in the way of image posting. Between the fact that I am recovering from my three surgeries and it is winter, ..........

Living in a caravan park in the winter in Australia, the flower opportunities are few and far between. Here is a shot that should give you a giggle - I purchased the flower and stuck it in the ground for my online macro course with Mike Moats.

In answer to your question, I will find the internet - I am carrying my 13" Dell - I will be posting images (calling all "police" ;):)), and I will continue to participate in this wonderful international forum wherever I happen to be!

Hi Jay, just for information in the UK a lot of Homeowners insurance policies DO include Accidental Damage and I have had the shutter changed on a Canon 5D through mine (dont ask how I damaged it :( ).

I have been very happy with the Chubb Ins from NANPA. The "accidental damage" provision sure gives me great piece of mind. FWIW, I do have my lap top on the policy.

Depending upon your particular gear mix you should/could also list your printer if it doesn't take you over the $15,000 since you are paying for $15,000 worth of coverage as a result of the $350 minimum premium.

Interesting--I have the insurance through Chubb also, but I assumed that the policy as written would only cover photo equipment, and not computer gear as well. It might be time to send them an updated list!

David, it is my understanding that anything used in your photography is OK to be listed. If your laptop is used for photography it should be part of your list. Sure is nice knowing that while travelling the computer is covered if I drop it. Minus the deductible of course.
