    Default ID please (Southeastern PA)

    I photographed this bird in the parking lot of the John Heinz NWR south of Philadelphia, PA and have not been able to ID him. Can someone help? He(she) is very distinctive looking.

    Yes, Killdeer. The, double black neckbands, red eyering, and somewhat tall posture (compared to Semipalmated Plover for example) are clear fieldmarks for this species. They are also famous for their "broken wing" display when one ventures too close to a Killdeer's nest.

    Chris,

    I forgot to add that the nest was also probably nearby as they will often nest in gravel parking lots or at least near the edge if there isn't too much traffic.
