Hello everybody.
This is my first post here. Eager to learn etc. So you will get some more photos from this corner of the globe (I am from Finland). Generally we have a lot of wildlife here, but when comparing to other countries avians, we don't usually have a bright colors and sometimes getting the photo requires a lot of work (we use hides for the scariest one). Finland is better known as a land of thousands of lakes but also additionally thousands of forests.
By the way, what would be the most easiest way to copy the exif-information of the photos from Lightroom to this forum (i.e. when you submit a photo to critiques forum)?
So here is one Black Headed Gull taken with 500/4+1.4, 1/5000 at f/7.1. Some cropping and local sharpening plus exposure tweaking.
Hi Juha - A big warm welcome to the BPN Family - Lots to like about your first post!
Love the wings up pose and the low shooting angle.
A number of things to consider - Mixed light is very hard to make a image work well - the front parts of your bird are in light and the back half in shadow - always best to line the sun up at your back and have your shadow pointing towards the bird. That said Backlit images can work as well!!
I am fine with the HA - as the bird is doing something - you could lighten the eye area a tad - to see if you can give it some more POP.
Looking forward to your next one - dont forget to check out the educational resources forum.
:)
Hi Juha,
A warm welcome to the BPN family...I like the composition and capture...the image is a tad under exposed, and you were dealing with mixed light from an angle, thus the shadows on your bird...I like the low capture angle...would have liked to have seen the bird flying in your direction, not away from you...I like the soft colors of the habitat...looking forward to your next one...
Big Warm Welcome Really looking forward to your images I know they are different from your part of the world and I'm a big fan of them !!!
With our critiques keep in mind most people are used to a particular look and will comment accordingly, you will find lots of comments useful but others will make no sense !!!
One thing I find with images form Finland is that they are dominated by mood and light and the light is different and beautiful. I think the difference in light tends to make different images.
For this one all I would suggest is having the bird slightly higher in frame so the head would not get lost in the grasses and maybe moving the bird slightly to the right so it is not as centered !!! Love the light and mood and its one fine image !!! Big Congrats and looking for to more fine images !!!!
Thank you for the comments and suggestions. I really need those to develop my skills.
I am aware of the certain, specific "forum" style and particular look which is perhaps developed due to the high level images and maybe a twist with the geographical location. I have seen a lot of beautiful colored birds and perfect posing from the critiques forum pictures, I also followed the late discussion of the BIF/BIS/BIH. This is something (the level of the discussion) we don't currently have in local finnish nature forums. And that's why I like to hang around here and widen my perspectives and learn more.
Yes the nature and light are somewhat different in Finland. Currently we approach the Midsummer Day and we have sun there around the day. But light is sometimes (evening and early morning) quite tricky because it is filtered due to the sun's low orbit and we can get those low key pictures more easily. BIF's are almost impossible.
I'll try to keep up some pace with the pictures (photography is not my occupation, just hobby) and also to discuss these local details we have here. To share also the stories behind your pictures is valuable. I am also going to have a photo safari in northern Norway during the summer time, and hopefully I can share some arctic photographing with you.
