    Default great crested flycatcher

first time I ever saw one of these, it was quite far away but I was able to capture a few shots and do a near 100% crop to get this

    taken with 1D MKII, Canon 500L + 1.4x TC, ISO 400, F5.6, 1/400

Head angle and eye contact look good. The chest area looks overexposed and I would put the bird a bit higher in the frame. Some more sharpening would be good, too.

thanks Axel, it was definitely overexposed, I already chopped it down 1 1/3 stop and used max recovery inside lightroom, I attempted to fix the chest but it was starting to look fake

I couldn't get it to sharpen much more without it looking fake because the 100% crop is only 800 x 1200

bottom line is I need to learn photoshop :)

Did you dial in any negative EC? Your aperture setting can't be right since you had the TC on your 500. ;)

on the shot no :( it came / went quickly so I did not get a chance to look at the histogram until it was gone

I have the tape trick on the tc so I can use it on my 40D thats why its still showing f4

Hmm, now I'm really confused, in the techs you say you used a 1D Mark II. :) Even if you tape the TC, technically you are at f/5.6.

lol yes when I posted the info above I looked at the exif, I never though of that so yes I guess really its f5.6 :)

    I changed it :)

actually I have done that many times, I keep forgetting that part when I post the info, ok time to remove the tape because I rarely use the 40D anyways now

If you have the 500f/4 IS your 40D should be able to acquire AF with a TC attached since you are at 5.6, only with the older 500f/4.5 you would have to tape the pins.

yes true, guess I never thought of that either since the 40D will focus upto F8

for some reason my 400 5.6 that I had seemed to focus better with the tape trick, I havent tried it with the 500L though

xxD bodies such as the 40D focus up to f/5.6, 1D bodies focus up to f/8, hence the need to tape the pins of the TC when used with 40D and the 400f/5.6, the AF performance of the 500f/4 with TC should be better if the pins are not taped, regardless if you use a 1D body or the 40D.

Good discussion above. Nobody mentioned that the broken branches are quite unattractive.... And yes, it would help to know the EXP COMP.
