    Default My Favorite Software

Hi, I have been asked by a friend who will be traveling through the "land of inexpensive software" what software he should obtain in addition to the basics like PS and LR. Can you assist me? What are your favorite software programs, e.g., Breeze Browser, Noise Ninja, Neat Image, Alien Skin Blow Up, et cetera.

    Thanks, Jay

Nik Color Effex complete for sure. Grad neutral density, polarizer, white neutralizer and many more...

Frankly, it's a tough call, I think if you get the entire Nik series, you don't need much else. While I'm with Fabs on how great the Nik Color Effects 3.0 is, I think Nik Viveza is the most powerful and practical tool for easy adjustment to tones, brightness, saturation, on any point or tone in the image, without sophisticated layering.

I always wonder: how does it work? I mean, do the Nik series replace the tools/adjustment layers of Photoshop so, say, you don't use the color/saturation or color balance, USM, LAB, etc., in Photoshop anymore? Or the Nik series are more for say Lightroom?

Are the Nik series standalone programs?

I think if one buys the entire Nik series - which almost cost the same as Photoshop - and also Photoshop, would that make the Photoshop a very expensive program? :)

I don't have the Nik stuff, though I tried the demos. Way too expensive. Vivenza is pretty cool, but ACR5+ has local adjustments and is similar. I'd say, without hesitation: Topaz Simplify, Adjust, Clean2, and Denoise. I use all of them regularly. I just downloaded Denoise3 (very recent upgrade) and so far looks good, and much faster than ver2. I have noise ninja, but I never use it anymore. Flaming Pear Flood, an old standby, has never lost its usefulness. Though I use CS4 now, occasianally I'll go back to an earlier program. For example Corel Photopaint 9, and earlier versions had something called the terrazzo filter. It made "flipping" as you guys call it very simple and other kaleidascope effects that work better than anything I've seen since. Corel removed it from later versions, and transferring the plugin to them wouldn't work. regards~Bill
