Another view - personally I prefer this one. These are full frame.

In PS I used a "vivid brush" set on 3 opacity to bring up light detail on top of head and then a light desaturation brush on jaw and chest where the spotlight lit him. I filled the shadow detail slightly - was just a little bit of bush visible bottom right in the raw image. Apart from that, contrast and sharpened slightly.
Again my "rule of thirds" is non - existent apart from the right ear.:o
Would have to add canvas to do anything else but I feel it would detract from the image?.

i love the compo as is, jeni. you mention spot light. did the pop-up flash make a difference? there is some really nice detail in the lion, but i would have definitely raised the ISO for some more shutter speed. just as insurance!! i would tone down the mane at the bottom frame edge. it seems a little brighter than the eye area and draws you there.

you captured a nice mood here. i think i like it a little more than the first one.

Hi Jeni - Agree with Mr H on this he - he nailed it for my tastes. I prefer the first one, think mr loin had a more King of the Jungle feel.
Looking forward to seeing more :)

Jeni, these are terrific shots. What accounts for the low light source? It looks as though King Leo sat patiently
while you placed a gold reflector below the frame and set your strobes accordingly. Not bloody likely, eh?

    Thanks Guys and Ladies.
Harold, have desaturated the chest a bit in the repost.
The tracker uses a very bright spotlight; we asked him to drop the focus into the grass just in front of the lion but the first 2 shots I took had a lot of glare and no detail on top of the head. ( other vehicles were shining straight on to him) Fortunately, he moved in our direction and lay down a bit so we were able to have a bit of say in regards to the spotlight. I did think of upping ISO ..... afterwards!!:o We were within 4 m of the lion so the pop -up flash seemed to bring up a bit of detail on top of the head. Maybe the experts could give an opinion?
It was so dark, I am ashamed to admit that although I managed to go off AV to SS, I didn't dare try change any other settings!! As it is, just after these were taken the lions moved off and in the "going over shrubs, logs etc" to follow them I moved the settings inadvertently while hanging on and lost the opportunity to get a couple more of the lions on the move.
