I'm still getting used to the new 400mm lens but I'm making progress. I think I might have needed to stop down one more stop on this one but I'm fairly happy with how it turned out.

    Canon 40D, EF 400mm f/5.6L
    f6.3 @ 1/250th, ISO 200
Manual mode, pattern metering, handheld while sitting
Processed in ACR & CS4; very small crop, lightened catch light a little to enhance it; levels adjustment

The mallard looks a little dark on my monitor Julie, which hides some of the detail which is there. From my experience you don't need to worry about sharpness wide open with this lense. You are really going to like this lense for bif's for sure. Dave

I agree with Dave's comments. Also I am not really liking the gravel foreground. Maybe there is a pond nearby that you could try? Other than that, I might sharpen and lighten the head a tad.

Looking forward to more with your new lens!

Dave, I think you're right. Is this better? I selected the duck and brought up the midtones a little bit more. It might still need another boost but I'll wait until I can recalibrate tomorrow and try again.

Repost is way better Julie! I love the comp, the light in the BG, colors, detail and calm pose of the Duck. I've heard wonders about that lens. Congratulations!

The repost looks much better. You probably could have dialed in positive EC and a higher ISO. I might crop this as a pano and maybe a little bit CW rotation?

Julie, You have done exceptionally well with the exposure on those greens of the head. Difficult to get right at the best of times. Super low angle, and love the head turn.

Axel, is this what you had in mind with the pano crop? I do like the crop but miss the beautiful bokeh at the top of the frame.

Yes, pretty much, maybe a tad more room at the bottom.
