I am bleary eyed in the Minneapolis Airport on my way home from the bear boat trip. To learn of the groups travel adventures check out today's blog post here: http://www.birdsasart-blog.com/. We had lots of great chances with Bald Eagles. This adult eagle was photographed with the Canon 800mm f/5.6L IS lens and the EOS 1D MIII. ISO 400. Evaluative metering +1 stop off the blue sky 40 degrees up: 1/1250 sec. at f/7.1 in Manual mode. AI Servo AF with the central sensor only. The background is snow-covered mountain--Katmai National Park. I will be headed back for fishing bears in September. Do check out the Wildlife Forum for some of my new bear images.

I'm glad you had a good time and I like the wide crop, pose and details but the BG puts it over the top for me.

Very nice composition and enviroment behind the Eagle, I love the light, colors, detail, and exposure if something I wish the tail was a tad more visible.
    Big congratulations and welcome back.

Liked everything about it. perfect head-angle, perfect wing-position, perfect light-angle. Getting all three in one shot is quite marvellous. And that background. Wow !! The only thing missing is 'open beak' :-) just kidding

Artie, A beautiful image, love the mountain and the blue sky that you've included. May I ask what you mean by "40 degrees up?"

    Artie,

Hope you get some rest. Love the way you used your 800 mm. F/ 5.6 lens. Excellent color, especially the beak and sharpness. Love that BG.

    Thanks for sharing....

Guess there is some crop on it as center sensor worked only. How do you see the sharpness viewed at 100% magnification?
I like to see the environment. Nice image Artie.

Hi Grace, 40 degrees up means 40 degrees up from the horizon, just a bit less than half way from the horizon to directly overhead. It was actually closer to 35 degrees :) :) :)

Hi Szimi, Yes, a crop as you can see from the ORIG.

I pretty much never check for sharpness at 100%, preferring instead to view the embedded JPEGs in a BreezeBrowser slide show at high quality; this gives me a good idea of the sharpness.

I did look at this one at 100% and it looked quite sharp to me. It is interesting to note that in the ORIG the central sensor was on the center of the rear part of the far wing, not on the head.... I find that things like that happen often.

I really like how the dark part of the background leads the eye right to the eagle. Nice shot.

Artie, Superb banking angle, showing excellent detail. This is sharp, and just pops so well from the BG. Congrats on an oustanding image.
