Although this baby has a seed in its mouth, it has not learned how to eat on its own. It is still following its parents around, calling and flapping its wings.

I might have another chance at catching the image again. How can I improve it?

    thanks!

It looks like the bird might have moved a bit while it was exposed to the sensor. I could see you were shooting at 1/80s? Is that how fast the 40D can allow when using flash? The composition looks fine to me...might be removing a tiny bit of room from the top part? I would also sharpen it more, and darken the seed to make it stand out a bit better.

Hi Cheryl - does look a little soft on my screen - faster shutter speed or some additional sharpening would help.
Like the BG and the pose.
    Desmonds advice is good.

    Hi Cheryl,
A lovely capture of this little guy, agree with the advise given...would suggest on selective sharpening the eye, and running a little noise reduction in the background...looking forward to your next one...

Thanks everyone!! Unfortunately, I did two rounds of sharpening, and darkening the seed, and 4 rounds of oise reduction on the background, before submitting this photo. It just isn't a great photo. Obviously shows the need for me to learn how to improve.

For the flash, the speed on the 40D is 1/250. One this pic I used the Flash Exposure lock. I am surprised that the shutter was still so slow.

I do get almost 2 hours a day when there is more light at this spot. Perhaps I should just try to be patient....

Hi Cheryl Tough to make a sharp image at that shutter speed !!! Even at the thought of noise do increase the ISO and worry about it later !!

When the image is not sharp there is only so much you can do and further sharpening makes it worse. In some of these cases would try illuminating with the flash maybe not quite as main but 3/4 of it ... bg will not be as nice but the flash will help stop the action !!!
