Bushtit

Certainly not the sharpest shot of the bird. But one of my favorites. The dried blossoms are small. The bird, even smaller (~ 10 cm and 5 g).
Taken when the sun popped out briefly in mid March (rare event here in Oregon). This was the first picture I snapped (of a bird and not my son) using my D90 and 200-400mm. The camera was still in P auto mode...
techwise, bump the ISO nest time to get you some more shutter speed. will have more keepers. compositionwise, i would crop a little off the right and maybe clone the out of focus branches in the bg. i love the light here. the perch with the dried blossoms is awesome!! nice job.
Hi Brian,
This is a sweet image, the lighting is superb, agree with the Doctor on evicting the out of focus branch and leaving the rest as is...super job...congrats...looking forward to more...
I like the suggestions Brian Can add you should use a converter for getting the bird bigger in frame Would love to have it more isolated Lots going on in the bg !!!!
Thank you for the suggestions. As I said, I had never used a DSLR to take a picture of a bird before this shot (first press of the shutter button outside the house!). I used a 1.4 converter and the bird was, in fact, quite close. He's just very small (size of a small hummingbird). I'll post a better picture ASAP (closer crop, faster shutter, and higher ISO).
I've definitely learned a lot in the last few months. I was very lucky in getting this shot! On the other hand, I've quite a bit of experience working with birds and half the battle seems to be predicting what a (small) bird will do... :)
