    Default Grizzly Portrait

I recently spent a few days in the Khutzeymateen in British Columbia Canada shooting grizzlies and eagles. Paradise. Here's a mature grizzly.

    Canon 1DsIII, 500mm f4 IS + 1.4x.

Nice portrait, if you have the paws I would include them otherwise I would crop tighter.

I could go either way on the crop. but if you did, crop right at he leg joint or the color line. Nice otherwise. By the way, I have no grizzlies, so I am jealous.

For me, there's something important about the bend in the one leg (arm?) that adds a lot to this image. No more cropping!

I WISH the paws were visible, but they never are in grassy situations, unless they stand up or scratch or something like that.

The 17 x 23" print of this is amazing and headed to my next show in August.

These bears simply amaze me. They are so large, and this image shows just how large they actually are. Good detail, and love the eye contact. Im jealous too, but there's no way Im gonna find a bear in South Africa.

Terrific portrait with just the right space and beautiful light. I'll investigate the location, thanks for sharing it!

Impressive looking animal. Although paws (or virtual paws) would've been nice to see, I like your choice of comp as presented since it shows bits of grass and BG color through the legs and under the body.

    Jeffrey,
Looks like a big fellow. There are lots of details in the image and the background is nice. I am sure in a big print the details would have come out well.

As a general rule, I either crop at the joints or show the full legs. Personally, I would have preferred a little bit more space at left and less at right. Waiting to see more of your grizzlies.

    Cheers,
    Sabyasachi

Cropping is always subjective .... i agree with Sabyasachi as a general rule of thumb. But in this instance I agree with you about the bend in the arm/leg the triangle it creates add to image.
    so well done lovely shot.

    Jeffrey,

Very nice bear portrait as presented. I am at odds whether cropping tighter would further enhance this fine image.
I will be there next May with a group ;)

    Best,

    Chas
