Here is one from yesterday, on an overcast morning with rain threatening. This little guy was probing the mud flats just like Mama Avocet had taught him to do. The image was cropped and adjusted in Lightroom. I'm not sure that I got enough light into the image. And are the colors OK? Is it over-sharpened?

    Thanks,
    Wendell

the light angle killed you here. that's all. would have been better with the sun behind you. cute little fella. hope you get a chance to get back out there and work it again. your camera settings look perfect to me. it doesnt look oversharpened either.

Well I'll be darned, Harold!!! And i didn't even suspicion it, think of it. That also may be, in large part, the problem with my previous post of an image which was taken from the same place on the same day. Thank you . . .

HI Wendell - Harold nailed it - The light angle is the main issue here - some days you just cant get the right subject with the right light angle - in these circumstances I always give high key a go - means adding lots of light and just worrying about properly exposing your bird - the rest of it will blow out.

A lower shooting angle would have also been good - might have got you wet though :)

Good pose with the foot coming up !! Exposure is good but as mentioned the light got you !!! Might want to try some fill flash for those images

Sometimes you can lower the shutter speed so the flash will reach and under those light conditions end up with a sharper image !!!

I agree with the comments. My solution, since I actually look for high-key situations (not all the time, but if the conditions warrant it) is to have the image perfectly backlit; no areas of subject can be lit or they will not only be blown-out whites, but will be merged with the white background. Overexpose the subject, probably at least +1 for the chick in this image. Your histogram will become pretty useless. You are intentionally blowing out the backgound, but not the subject. Sorry, I like the graphic quality and the emphasis placed on the subject(having absolutely no distractions) that high-key provides. regards~Bill
