How would you crop this photo? I've tried a lot of different crops but none look good to me.
D90, 1/640th at F4, ISO 800, 300mm. Taken at 7:20 pm in my backyard so had to boost the ISO. Didn't stay long made this one good shot.

    Hi R,oy:

Love your lovely Rufous. For just a crop I would go as shown, and if you wanted to go fancy the sky is the limit. However, IMHO, opt for a better BG next time.

Cloverdale, Chilliwack, Cultus Lake, Vedder River (Winter Steelhead Run) & Hope were part of my playground over 60 years ago. Beautiful B.C.

My attempt. Still, I prefer other head angle though.

Hi Roy - Gus's crop would be my choice (Always good to have more room in the direction the bird is looking rather than behind) - good looking bird.

The bright spots in the BG are quite distracting - taking the viewers eye away from the main subject - Our eyes are always drawn to the brightest part of a image - you could try toning them down in photoshop although alwyas best to try and get close in camera.

Looking forward to seeing more :)

    Hi Roy
Like Lance I found the bg whites a bit distracting.
    Here's my take.

Not particularly recommended, however, here is a jiffy BG change (12 min)

    Now on to French open!!

Gus, I liked your crop. I am just not quite good enough to take all the BG out and replace it. I have fished the Vedder numerous times but since I am a flyfisherman it is just toooooo crowded now. Last time I was there before dawn and the fog/mist covered the water and banks. I waded out to my spot let out my flyline and waited for the fog to clear. When it did I faced about 8 gear fisherman on the opposite bank:confused: so I just packed up and went home.:) I have taken summer runs from the Coquilla though.

Lance, the BG was/is a problem. He hangs around my yard but he is very skittish when I am not sitting. I just wanted a shot and took my chance. Now I can concentrate on getting a nice BG as well. When we are sitting on the deck he comes around for the Honeysuckle and then he's too close.:D

    Hi Roy

Crop wise keep in mind small bird in frame should be place toward one of the corners. I like the re post crops .. and the radical bg clean up !!! .. don't mind the original bg that much its sort of unique !!! btw focusing wise try to position the sensor point right on the head of the hummer !!!

Roy - too close???? - Wish I had that probelm.

Too close for what - full body shot? Just shoot a head and shoulders shot.
Too close to focus??? - Get some extension tubes to increase the minimum focussing distance of your lens.

IMHO - There is never to close --- LOL :)

I came out very similar to Gus.....rotated 7º to take advantage
of the perch's graphics. Also a quick job of Gausian Blur(31 px)on bg
and I missed the beak :(

    just playing....another option

Actually, I would like to see Gus' bird on Dave's BG. I think Gus' PP of the bird make it "pop" and Dave's BG give a more natural feeling. IMHO - actually I like them all; however, since we are voting..........

Hi Al, my focal point was set up for a bird pointing the other way and knowing this bird I didn't have much time. That's one reason I asked for help with the crop. I tried hard to get the head in focus.:)

Lance, this little guy sneaks up on you when you least expect it. I had my 300 on and he was too close to focus so I'll try a different lens in the next couple of days. I need help to set up a misting and bathing area.
