Ok folks - what could be improved in this one - one particular reason I wasn't happy with it.
These little guys dont stay still for long - quite happy to walk right up to the front of the lens and then they will be gone - have to work quick.

    D3
    Nikon 200-400VR with 1.4 Converter
    F5.6
    1/160TH
    400 ISO
    +0.3EV
    Handheld lying on the ground

Could have increased the ISO for a faster shutter speed (But thats not it)

    :)

    Lance:

for me its all about the blurry tail. Push that D3 up to 1000, stop down the aperture, and I would be happier.
I also don't particularly like the OOF foreground, which might also look better with the above change.

    Cheers

I like the overall feel Love those soft tones, pose and low angle.

The low angle produces that oof bg but I like the overall low angle look .... just taste and not for everyone. Tail wise being oof not sure any stopping down is going to make any difference? ... at that distance the dof is minimal. Big Congrats Lance !!!!

Love it as presented Mr. Peters...I like the head on close up pose combined with the ultra low capture angle...the color rendition is superb and the details are nice and sharp...good show...keep them coming...:D:cool:

    Lance,

Since you asked I will take a stab.

Dominate light on left side or angle of the beak are nits, but could be issues. For me the pointed rock on LHS pulls my eye from subject?

On my monitor the throat area - especially the right side - looks bright. I would tone it down a bit, bring in more details

lance i got no clue what you are talking about, asides from toning the whites down just a tick and lightening the darker eye socket, i like it. those improvements i speak of are very minor. i like it as presented A LOT!!

is it the fact the bird is looking past you and not at you?

    Lance,

Maybe going forward provide some direction regarding your mind-set. For example, composition, exposure, etc. Is it a question of "how can it be improved" or a question of "there is something wrong". The former is a real green-field.

Don't get me wrong, this is cool and I love this stuff. Just trying to learn, this is only my opinion.

    Best, J$

I tend to agree with Jeff here. This one is tough, especially we have both Al and Gus pretty much found this a pretty good image. :D

There's a lot of things that could be done to a digital image; improvement or not is another thing. Many photoshop creative type could do tons of things to this image and make something amazing out of it (try the retouching forum on dpreview.com). But I'm not sure that's what is being sought after here. :)

Hi Guys - just wanted to get you thinking :) Didn't want to just give you the answer. Ill will in future label them "Whats wrong here"

For me its the angle of the light - one half of my bird is brighter than the other half. Maybe it doesn't look to bad - some like it others dont - its all personal taste - I would have prefferd for the bird to be evenly lit!!!

The rock in front of the leg also doesnt excite me - but it is what it is. Al is right the OOF Tail was always going to be OOF - Not enough DOF not matter what.
