or...Which one should I eat first? In view of the thread entitled "Bird Habitat vs Fill Frame Shots" over in the General Photography Discussion forum (very interesting reading, by the way), I thought I'd give this image a try. This is a Black Oystercatcher in its habitat along the Oregon coast. The rock, which is exposed at low tide, is covered with California Mussels - one of the bird's food items. 40D, 300 f/4 + 1.4X, 1/1250, f/7.1, ISO 400. Comments are welcome.
Poor bird! :) I like the idea, eye contact and the square crop works well. It seems as if the critical focus is somewhere in front of the bird. Maybe you can sharpen the OC a bit more.
I think I'd call this one "An Oystercatcher's Paradise". Excellent use of the habitat to tell a story. The focus probably was in front of the bird but you could always select the bird and give it another round of USM. I might also like a little more of the blue on the right if you wanted to make it more horizontal although the square crop does work well as is.
Hi Steve,
I like the idea but I think it needs some of the rock to show through all those mussels. As it is, it looks to me to be just a pile of shells. Maybe some visible water/waves lapping at the edge if available to give more of an oceanside feel? Probably not possible at the time though as you said it was low tide.
Steve , great enviromental image showing exactly where they dwell and survive. The OC is well exposed, and love the hint of red of the beak. I would maybe have cropped a bit closer, but still showing enough of his choice. A little bit of tide would have been a bonus.
