Default Alder Flycatcher on Old Growth Phragmites

Alder Flycatcher just after sunrise this morning at a local pond. While I would have liked to have the entire phragmites frond in focus, at close range and 800<< even at F11, it just wasn't going to happen.

Great light, details, pose, perch and BG. I don't mind that the phragmites are not entirely in focus, actually I think it's good since it doesn't take too much attention away from the bird that way. If anything, I might lighten the eye a bit.

    Jim:

Excellent exposure, entire bird sharp, good HA,catchlight. Love the feather detail, BG.

The OOF plant is noticeable, but not objectionable to me. The bird carries the day. You could crop up a bit to reduce the amount of OOF plant, but I don't think its essential.

    Cheers

    Randy

Axel...next go round I will lighten the ey a tad

Randy....I had tried that as I was thinking along the same lines as you were....I just didn't like the "squareness" the presentation then acquired.

Hi Jim: You have done a great job with this capture. First of all, the BG is out of this world. If only we could all get this lucky. Yes, the phragmites are noticeably OOF but IMO they compliment the colors and softness of this bird. The capture has a gentle flow about it.

Very nice image, nice head turn, eye contact, and BG. The OOF phragmites don't bother me.

The OOF phragmites don't bother me at all either, and I love the darker downward curved part of it below the bird. An all around excellent image Jim!

Jim, super pose, and this is really sharp. Love the detail, and clean BG too. I would maybe move him down in the frame a bit.

Jim, I don't mind the perch being a bit OOF, in fact, if it were mine, I'd have probably throw it OOF on purpose.
Your DOF compromise looks good to me.

Your BG's are always so good wish I could find them myself.
The oof phrags are ok if anything I may darken them a bit to focus attention on the bird more

    See you in the field

    John

    Hi John....

Find ponds / creeks / open spaces and shoot the subjects in the right light on the side closest to you :)

Head angle made this comp work for me. Lovely and terrific shot IMO. Great light, pose, perch, BG, detail, colors, all A+.

Stunning, Jim. I can't add anything that hasn't already been said above. I don't think I would change a thing.

The flycatcher is wonderful with its pose and detail. That BG really makes this one a beautiful image.
