    Default IPOD Touch?

Does anyone use an IPOD Touch out in the field--I played with one a bit the other day at the Apple Store and it struck me as being possibly useful for keeping Camera manuals--and other stuff like a hyperfiocal chart available in the field.

Basically, I am looking for an excuse to get one. Can anyone help?

They are great, as are iPhones! I store PDFs of Nikon and Canon manuals, a big help when I lead tours and people are unfamiliar with their gear. Then of course there's iBird, a superb birding field guide that includes photos, illustrations, range maps, calls, etc. There are weather apps and tide apps also. Not to mention some nice photography apps.

I would get an IPhone in a second if I could still use my Verizon service. It sounds like there is a touch in my future. The key question now is should i get the 16gb or the 32Gb model....

    William,

I have looked at the Blackberry Storm and did not like it--but I cannot remember why. I was thinking of going back to the Mall to look at the Blackberry again before I spend the $$.

Rocky I'm fairly certain you will be able to use your iPhone with a Verison Act soon. There is a new phone coming out which will allow... I think it will have a higher price Not sure how much but $800 has been mentioned.

btw the advantage of the iPod Touch is the large HD if you need it !!!

$800 is crazy money for a phone--The most I ever spent on a phone was under a $100...But who knows I might bite.

I use the new iPod Nano for playback of bird calls. This is extremelly important in the tropics, without playback to attract the birds you will miss a lot of opportunities. I'm sure there's good use for it in North America too. Of course you also need a small speaker, I use one by Altec Lansing.

The reasons I prefer iPod Nano over the iPhone for this is that it's much smaller in size, I can easily put it in my pocket and won't even feel it's there. The price is also much cheaper of course. iPhone sure is cool though...

I use my Ipod touch in all sorts of situations, including in the field. There are apps that are pertinent to this forum, including Air Sharing, that you can copy any pdf, doc and many other files to the device (including camera manuals, charts etc.), Simple Note, where you can copy chunks of texts, including messages in this forum, and of course all the photography related podcasts and videos. I also recently bought an app called Ibird Pro, which is basically a multimedia field guide to the birds of N.America. I use my home wi-fi network to exchange info between Itunes on the computer and the Ipod touch, and can also browse BPN etc. anywhere there is a WiFi network. It fits fine in my pant pocket.
