This guy (a Black Phoebe, I'm told) hopped into view for only a moment, as I was trying to photograph another bird in a marsh area two days ago. The image was overly dark; I needed to change the EV setting but had no time. So, I tried various amendments (about a 40% crop, etc.) to improve the presentation. What do you think? (As one thing, perhaps I should have removed the gastropod shells?)
Looks real good to me, I can see detail in the dark areas. Often with a dark subject on a middle tone background Evaluative metering can work it out, good EV selection IMO,.. (had to protect the whites as well). I bet the histogram was biased towards the left. Nice exposure and yes, I would clean up foreground a tad.

beautiful bird and well done, wendell. i would only add a little to the bottom to include all of the shell at the frame edge and maybe a round of sharpening on the eye. you did great here. i love the pose with the eye contact and detail in the eye too!
Agree with the others' assessment and will add that the bird looks a bit too centered for my taste. Would like to see a bit more room to the right and a little less on the left. Good pose and the shells add a nice touch!
I like the idea of moving the bird back a bit more !! ..... your base exposure was close enough it works btw removing the shells is not a bad idea since they do attract attention !!!
