Default Great Horned Owl Juvi with repost

My girlfriend found an owl family at a local school on Sunday. I went there in the early afternoon but there were no clean looks to be had. I paid the location another visit at 7 pm and the juvenile was sitting on a clean perch looking right at me. Unfortunately the light was relatively low and there was a stiff breeze; I was forced to use a high ISO, relatively slow shutter speed, and had to rely on fill flash. I was pretty pleased with the images that I got.

    What a look!
Great job dealing with the low light and wind.
Nice comp and love the soft colors.

Maybe try to tone down the two brighter spots in upper left.

Doug, he's certainly telling you that you werent welcome. Great use of both flash, and a high ISO. Comp works well, and I like the concerned look on his face, together with the open beak. He stands out nicely from the surrounding foliage.

Agree with Stuart here, but lovely image, great result considering under what conditions this one was created. BG is a bit bussy but it still work to me. Congratulations!

    Doug:

Nice capture. I agree with prev. posters. Only minor point would be the dark leaf to his left eye area. It seems to jump out a bit since it looks different from the other leaves. Might be worth a bit of tweaking.

    Thanks. Persistence does pay off!

That is one fierce Owl, love the eye contact and get the heck ot of here expression. Did you blur the BG? It has a peculiar look to it.

Another good one Doug! I think the BG looks ok. I do agree that the one dark leaf is distracting.

A bit more separation of the bg would have been nice but like you say quite pleasing with those results. I dark leaf to the right of the left eye and two spots in ULC are minor things. Nice work. Hope he wasn't too stressed.

He looks angry but the funny thing is that this is a yawn. I spent 45 minutes with this juvi, and he was totally relaxed for the entire encounter. Thanks for your concern though!

Here's a repost that tries to incorporate a number of suggestions. Much less BG blurring, dealing with the bright spots in the ULC, and lightening the leaf to the right of the bird. Better or worse?

I think your repost is better Doug! The dark leaf is handled nicely! I really like the talons on this guy!

Great find and good to know the angry look is a yawn. :) I like the repost much better and might give it a bit more room at the top.

Here's a mid-yawn image that looks somewhat less menacing. :) Unprocessed of course.
