    Default Forster's Tern

I really like the action in this shot of a Forster's Tern in a near-vertical dive, but it just doesn't seem to "pop" enough. Also, although the bird's side seems to be "blown", in fact there is detail in the whites that I can't seem to bring out without badly damaging the rest of the image. Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Bill

Hi Bill - do post your shooting info will help everyone help you.
One of the problems here is the angle of your light - always best to have it at your back, you could try a multiply layer to try and recover some of the whites.
Your bird could use some additional sharpening and some NR on the background. For my tastes the bird is a little too centered and not crazy about the square crop - a vertical might have worked better with more space at the bottom.
    keep them coming :)

    Hi Lance,

Thanks for the comments. Shooting info:
D300, 200mm, f/5.6, 1/1000 sec, ISO 200. I've added canvas at the bottom, but could add more. I'll fiddle some more with that big white area.

    Hi Bill,
half of the bird is lit up and the other half in the dark due to the light coming in from the side...agree with Mr. Peters' assessment on the techs...I do like the action captured, starting the dive...

    Hi Bill

It is a neat pose but you need much more room up front Need space for the bird to fly into !! Can crop the sides a bit more and the proportion will accentuate speed !!

When you find the birds try getting on sun angle before shooting !!!

Great advise above. Nice action shot, can see the focus on his face.

Close shot for a 200MM, well done; how much did you crop?
