great calling pose and clean perch and bg are nice. there is a lot of noise in the bg and in the shadows of the bird. you didnt post your EV, but i would bet you were even and needed to be +1.3 or so. underexposing and trying to bring out detail in the blacks will introduce noise.

You are correct. When I checked, the EV was -.3.

    Good call Harold !!!!

Milt you got a good pose and the image is sharp .... remember the exposure Some of those look funny on the screen but trust the Histogram. With overcast skies you can dial in close to two and two thirds and the bg will be totally blown out !!!

    Hi Milt,
I like the calling pose...good capture and placed just right in frame...agree with Doctor Davis on the exposure and the noise in the background...just keep them coming...

    Milt,

Nice advise from harold, great composition. I love these birds but can never get this close. What was your distance to the subject - well done.

    Could I ask:
How much crop and what time of day.
    Do you shot raw.
Did you say the EV was (-.3) a/k/a -1/3. What exposure adjustments did you make (how much movement right) did the left side clip?
What was you metering mode (Spot, Eval, etc.).
Finally, what does you post production workflow look like? For example, Raw--->LRII (crop, exposure adjustments, curves, color/sat/contrast, sharpen, noise reduction.

    Jeff, to answer your questions:
I was about 20 ft. from the bird. He and another one just sat there for quite a while posing for us. I got about 30 shots of him.
Time of day was 4:40 pm.
I cropped a bit off the right side for composition.
I shoot JPEG and do a minimum of PP in Picasa3. Auto Contrast, sharpening and saturation.
    EV was -1/3.
    Metering was center weighted.
    Lens used was 70-300mm + EC-14 Converter.
    I hope this helps.
    Thanks for looking and commenting.

Here is the link to see all the Red-winged BB images from that day.

    Milt,

Cool shots on web link, So you were not using the full zoom on the lens (224 MM vs 70 - 300 MM?). I like the ISO setting and the shutter exceeds the 1/focal length theory 1/300 and f6.3 is fine.

I am thinking with a 224 MM focal length at 20 feet you would still have a nice size crop, this could also introduce noise as well. Did you make exposure adjustments, moving histogram to the right, how much?

On balance, try to keep histogram towards right w/o clipping and consider a noise reduction s/w. You had a great day I bet, having them pose for you, wow, you are lucky. Two weeks ago I spent hours trying to get a male and could not get close - nice work - keep em coming.

    Jeff, my mistake. I did not use my 70-300mm lens + 1.4TC. I used the 50-200mm + the 1.4TC.
These images were of just 2 birds. One posed for a while and flew off the limb he was perched on and then the second bird sat on a broad leaf and posed.

I made some exposure adjustments, going between f/5.6, f/6.3 and f/7.1.

    Thanks,

You can load again on the same post, anytime. I think reposting in the same thread is not constrained by the 24 hour rule. I would try some noise reduction s/w (Topaz) is a recommendation I received from Al. You can download it and demo for 30 days, no charge.

Looking forward to talking to you soon, great job with the Black Birds.

All the techs covered above - main issue for me is the noise.
    keep them coming.
