Can I use a Nikkor extender ( TC-17) with a Sigma lens? Or do I need to stick to the Sigma extender.
I love my 120-300 f/2.8 zoom lens but feel that my Sigm 2X extender removes too much sharpness. The Sigma 1.4 misses a little reach. This is why I was considering the Nikkor 1.7X
Hi Rene I'm not sure I know with some Sigma you need to use the Sigma converter like the 150 and 180 macro will not work with other converters ... doesn't physically fit.
As far as sharpness it will loose some but need to check with a target, evaluating images from the field is not the way to do it !!! If yo don't have a specific target shoot something with print !!
btw when I was using Nikon there was a difference in quality between the 1.4X and 1.7X !!! If you get to use the 1.7X your biggest gain will be faster AF !!
Hi Rene,
I can't use my Canon TC on the Sigma 180 without a 12mm extension tube.....so keep the Nikon converters and get a set of tubes.....I have Kenko.....no glass....so don't pay the big bucks.
Hi Rene - you need to physically modify the Nikon 1.7 by filing off a metal flange on the inside of the Nikon Converter - I have done it - not that hard - however it is a hit and miss affair as to which lenses it works with.
Doing this does not affect the performance on the nikon lenses.
I have a Nikon TC-17 and it works beautifully with my Nikon 500 f4. It does not work on either my Sigma 70-200 or 50-500. It will not mount. I do have a Kenko Pro 300 1.4X that works okay and will also autofocus with my Sigma and Nikon lenses. I have used both together to shot the moon. There is a teleconverter compatability chart at Nikonians.org.
