    Default Striated Heron?

Saw this critter this morning on Merimbula Lake in far S.E. NSW. Sorry for the poor image, he was quite a ways off on a rather dull morning and I just have an Oly 12-60 at this point, this is a 100% crop. Is it a Striated Heron?

    Thanks for taking a look!

We will have to defer to the Antipodians in the group to solve this one. I'm away from my books in Newfoundland.

Thanks for looking John. I've done some searching on the web and the birdforum.net has some good pics and posts on what is very likely this bird. There are quite a few variations (and names) for it all over the world and even in Oz; Striated Heron looks to be the one here.

    Thanks again,

    Don

    G'day Don,

Yes, it's a Striated Heron (also sometimes called a Mangrove Heron).
Merimbula Lake seems to be a good spot for them.

Thanks Leo, I'm looking forward to getting a longer lens so I can hopefully start getting some better shots of the many birds here.

    cheers,

    Don
