Not much at Fort DeSoto this morning but did find this guy on the beach. Canon 800mmm f/5.6L IS lens with the EOS-1D MIII on the Mongoose M3.5 atop a Gitxo 3530 LS tripod. ISO 400. Evaluative metering +2 stops: 1/60 sec. at f/5.6 (in Manual mode). Fill flash with Better Beamer at -2 stops. ACR converson and minor beach cleanups.

Don't be shy; all comments welcome.

Nice symmetrical stare. I like the yellows in the eyes and legs and the clean pale BG - that sand is amazingly white.

I like that low POV and the eye's contact with your subject.Excellent control of the white BG.Hope that I will be able one day to understand the good used of evaluative metering.

I like the light and exposure control, the sand looks almost like snow.

I will never ever be as good as you handling light subjects on light backgrounds. I like his interested pose, like he's considering your camera for lunch.

Arthur I know how much you love to work wide open but don't you agree that f/6.3 or f/8 would have yielded a more-in-focus back and shoulder?

Love it any ways and wish this one would be in my files.

Hey Michel, It is a million times easier with digital than with film. Simply add (usually) or subtract light so that you wind up with some data in the right-most box of the histgoram (with no or very few flashing highlights...) It's that simple.

If you wish to really learn exposure theory I would recommend ABP and ABP II (Exposure Simplified). They are on sale as a combo. :)

Hi Gayle, Just add light until the histogram almost touches the right hand axis... With the MIII, you need to add lots of light. Much less with Nikon. With whites and sun however the Dark Side folks need to subtract much more light that we White folks do. :)

Hey JC. I agree but do not care :) Actually, the difference would be very slight in this case. And I was already down to 1/60 sec. I have been focusing on the eyes and not caring for 25 years; why change now??? :) :D :)

Too bad that you were using a 800mm FL Artie, a 2500mm lens would be much better in this case :D Just kidding, but I wanted to point out that, instead of the fact that the image looks great and you did a very good with the exposure, shooting angle.. etc, it is the intense stare of the bird and the symmetry of the head what I like the most in this image. A close portrait of the head in vertical composition would be killer. ;)

Thanks Juan. After lowering my tripod and getting down on one knee, I made lots of images of this bird. It was the head position and stare that made this the one for me.

I like that both eyes are so nicely displayed Artie. And I like your choice to center the bird in the frame.
