    Default Borneo: Diard's Trogon (Male)

This is my wife's effort on our recent trip to Sepilok in Sabah, Malaysia.
The photo was taken under heavy canopy cover towards early evening. Trogons are shy and quiet birds but once they are comfortable with your presence you could be in for a bonus.

Beautiful bird and well captured. I like exposure control, BG and details, which are great considering the low shutter speed. I might reduce the color noise, which should be easy in your RAW converter. Thanks for sharing this image, I think your wife needs her own forum account. :)

Impressive sharpness considering the challenging lighting and techs! Very beautiful species. I would only clean up the small vertical line touching the edge bottom middle (and a small smudge above that).

What a bird. Amazing colors. I am very surprised as well how sharp it turned out considering the shutter speed. Your wife needs an account for herself for sure. She rocks. Congratulations.

Great species and lovely light, BG, detail, colors and perch, I would suggest working the red channel a bit as it looks a little oversaturated IMO. Congratulations!

Stunning bird Phil! Love the pose, perch, and BG. I would remove the dark diagonal branch running through the bird's neck and also smooth out the BG in the bottom center of the frame. Really like this image!

Astounding bird, colors, pattersm HA, and sharpness. You gotta love that 4-stop IS. So tell me, your wife has her own 800???

The only thing that bugs me it the twinned branch in front of the bird...

My wife Kian says thanks to all for your kind comments. She may in time open her own forum account.

That 4 stop IS capability of the 800mm helps but I think locking down the system and long lens techniques has a lot more going though. Most important thing is for the subject to remain still.

Artie - When we are together in the field it is easier on her with the 800mm as it is just a shade heavier than the 500mm + 1.4 ext. I still carry the 600mm + 1.4 ext. We are very tempted to sell the 600mm and go for another 800mm. Time will tell and we still have the 500mm that has not seen much action eversince the 800mm came into the picture!

    Hi Phil,

    re:

That 4 stop IS capability of the 800mm helps but I think locking down the system and long lens techniques has a lot more going though.

I agree that locking everything up helps but I have made sharp images with the 800 down to 1/6th sec. and I never made anything sharp at 1/20 se. before the 800 so I have to disagree with the complete statement above. (Note also that the flash also help with sharpness.)

Most important thing is for the subject to remain still.

I agree with you 100% on that.

Artie - When we are together in the field it is easier on her with the 800mm as it is just a shade heavier than the 500mm + 1.4 ext. I still carry the 600mm + 1.4 ext. If money is not a big issue (and I assume that you will be selling the 600 f/4), then the 800 is a no-brainer choice over the 600. It is lighter, sharper, and the need for TCs is greatly reduced (the latter resulting in increased sharpness). And the 4-stop IS :) :D :)

    Hi Artie,

We agree to disagree then with the following examples in as far as the 600mm not being able to take sharp photos at 1/20s or slower . I followed your guide in ABP 1 on long lens techniques in addition to mirror up before firing the trigger, I am also a firm believer of using fill flash whenever possible

http://www.pbase.com/996sps/image/76645485 Ok this last one is with the 500mm though.

The 800mm is beyond doubt a no-brainer as you have put it. It is better balanced and the 4 stop IS certainly helps like you say. Money no object? Wish that was true. I may have to sell the other kidney to fund the additional 800mm!!!

    Hi Phil,

    re:

    OK.

with the following examples in as far as the 600mm not being able to take sharp photos at 1/20s or slower.

Well, those images are sharp. You must be better, smarter, stronger and more talented then me as I never made anything sharp under 1/30 sec.

I followed your guide in ABP 1 on long lens techniques

    :) :) :)

ABP I or II? (I like the stuff on sharpness techniques in II much better; I rarely put my hand on top of the lens any more.

in addition to mirror up before firing the trigger

Ah, you forgot to tell me that when thos trogons sit still they really sit still!

I am also a firm believer of using fill flash whenever possible.

    Agree again.

When you have a still bird and go to mirror lock do you use your finger on the trigger or a cable release or the self-timer? Do you use Live View for any of the above?

The 800mm is beyond doubt a no-brainer as you have put it. It is better balanced and the 4 stop IS certainly helps like you say. Money no object? Wish that was true. I may have to sell the other kidney to fund the additional 800mm!!!

Well, the one plus there is that if you sell the other kidney it either reduces or eliminates the chance of passing a kidney stone (depending on whether you already sold one). I can attest to the benefits of that; see the blog entry from the Leamington, Ontario emergency room: www.birdsasart-blog.com

And again, Kian's image is truly amazing on all counts. Is she originally from Malaysia?

    Hi Artie,

You are the "guru" and have much more experience in this field. Definitely none of smarter, stronger etc from here and neither was it ever implied. Just that our conditions here differs from yours and we make do the best we can.

The wired remote is the other bit of kit that is always affixed to the camera and used very often as was in the examples shown. Hardly use Live View at all except to check the sharpness at times in 5x or 10x magnification.

My wife is 100% born and bred Malaysian.

    Artie,

Forgot to mention Kian has your ABP 1 next to her bed and she reads it diligently like the bible!!!! "Struth"! no sarcasm at all either.

Thanks Phil for the info. I was not at all insulted when I wrote the smarter, stronger stuff, just stating what is likely true Actually, I will have to buy a cable release...

And you guys should get a copy of ABP II to share.... (Sharing with spouses is permitted!)
