    G'day everyone,

I am also currently trying to decide on which of these 2 lenses to purchase, and would be very grateful for any advice anyone could offer on which of these is the better one to purchase and why.

    Lense 1: Canon 300mm F4L IS + 1.4TC (=420mmF5.6)
    Lense 2: Canon 100-400mmL IS F5.6

At the moment I am using a Canon 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 IS lense on a Canon 400D body.
This is my first DLSR after upgrading from a P@S camera last year.

The problem I am currently having with this lense is the lack of sharpness when opened up to 300mm, which is where most of my photos are taken. (For an idea on where I am at technically, this is one of my better shots taken last week, but as you can see, it still lacks some sharpness).

I recently had the opportunity to use a mates 300mm f4 + 1.5TC for which I was able to take this shot with. I liked the weight and feel of the lense, and it auto focused a lot quicker than my current lense. And at the moment I'm swaying towards purchasing that one with the 1.4TC.

The lense I purchase will be my everyday lense, so it needs to be versatile. Most of my shots will be of shorebirds and taken on a tripod.

My question would be, which of these 2 setups when put onto my current 400D body would give the sharper image? And are there any other considerations I need to be aware of when purchasing a lense that I haven't mentioned here?

    Regards,
    Mark
