I've just joined BPN and thought I should say hello. I'm new to photography (since Xmas) but am studying with Ken Newcombe, a local expert in S. Ontario. Ken has repeatedly hammered home two key lessons: #1 Instead of investing in new gear, I should learn photography. #2 My gear's no good! :) I'm looking forward to learning from all of you.

Welcome, Stuart! You will love it here! Immeasurable amount of knowledge and willingness to share here.

Yes, I have been told those two lessons, very often, too. LOL

If you would post your shooting information on this image, we can better discuss it with you.

Hi Stuart - Another big warm welcome to BPN. Gear does not make the photographer, you can have the most expensive gear - but if you dont know how to use it....

As Cheryl mentioned include your full shooting info, Camera Model, Lens Model and Focal Length, Shuutter spped, Aperture, ISO, Handheld or Tripod etc with your post - it will help us help you.

Stuart, I like the simple perch for this image, and your background really helps the swallow to stand out. You have a catch light in the eye and bright whites without overexposing them. Have you done any processing on this image? Any sharpening? It would be nice if the swallow was turned just a bit toward the camera instead of just a fraction away from the camera.

Welcome Stuart, and thanks for the nice image.
I really like the perch and the overall composition,
nicely done. A better Head Angle would be great,
but in this case it does not bother me too much.

Please tell us about the no good equipment,
and then get ready to laugh, when I tell you my equipment:)
In any case, tell us all, including, lens, converters, filter?

    Cheers, Ilija

    Big Warm Welcome Stuart

Tough going after the little guys !!! I like the clean bg, pose and interesting perch A slightly different head angle would have been great

Since there is not data difficult to know why the image is soft I'm guessing slow shutter speed and large crop? Do need to get that eye sharp !!! Looking forward to your next one ..... good advice on the gear :)
