    Default 300mm f4 IS + TC1.4 or 400mm f5.6?

That's preety much my quiestion, what would you guys recomend? I own a 300mm IS f4, but as my camera has only a 1.3 crop I am not sure if I should just by a tc1.4 for the 300mm or directly go for the 400mm f5.6

    Any thought will help. Thanks!

    I'd go for the 400/5.6
Teleconverter is going to slow down your AF.

Same here! I have try both and ended with the 400mm f5.6 Asd you have the 1.3X factor, I presume you got a 1D2, so you can ad a 1.4XTC and f8, with close to no loss of AF speed.

What do you want it for? For birds in flight the 400 is much better. The 300/TC combo can come in handy in low light because of IS and it works as semi-macro, too.

Ramon I have and use both lenses and they compliment each other well.

The 300 F4 will focus very close (3 feet) and I often use it for macro work with tubes and the IS can be useful there as well but the 1.4 will slow down the AF considerably and it can be a bit short on the 1.3 crop however when hand held or Monopod on perching birds in low light with the IS on, it comes into its own.

The 400 f/5.6 is the best birds in flight lens I have ever used both with the 1.4 (560mm) and without. The MKIII will still autofocus very quickly at f/8 using the centre point (all I use in flight anyway) and without the 1.4 it is blindingly fast to AF and VERY sharp, its only drawback is that its minimum focus distance is 11 feet compared to the 3 Feet of the 300 and it is not a low light lens.

    I love them both.

Thank you all fro your thoughts, I think I'll just change my 300 f4 IS for the 400 f5.6, I am not a big fan of TC's anyway :D
Again, thanks, I apreciate your help.

It depends on what you are going to use it for. For birds in flight the 400/5.6 is hands down the one to get. However the 300/4 IS is a very versatile lens and works reasonably well with the 1.4TC. You may lose AF depending on your camera, but you will have IS.
