Ditto what Doug said, Mike. The narrow vertical crop works well here. I might wish for a little more DOF on the lower part of the cattail stem. On my monitor, it looks like the dark colors could be darker to give the bird more snap. Well done.

I would give the image another round of USM, but I love the powerfull singing pose, the soft light, the wonderfull BG and perch. Congratulations!

Great pose and BG. I toned down the midtones to 0.8 and sharpened the bird a bit more.

Great pose and calling behaviour. Axel's repost is a good improvement.

    Mike....

Cool bird and I like the background although there are a couple of brighter areas I might tone down a bit.

What I don't understand, unless the cattail was really leaning, is why the bird is focused when the base of the cattail is not?

Was the birds weight bending it over such that F7.1 couldn't get them in the same DOF?

The cattail was leaning even without the bird. Bird did not move it much if at all.
There was only one tiny clear window through the front reeds to the perch so I was
pretty much limited to this angle.

    Alex,

You "toned down the midtones to 0.8" and that seemed to give the image the extra punch some of my shots need. Would you mind explaining the procedure for me.

By the way, I love the strident vocal pose, Mike. Lovely shot!

    Thanks,

    Gerald

Gerald, I suspect what Axel did was to move the midtone slider in levels to the right to a reading of 0.8. Ideally access it through and levels adjustment layer or via image/adjustment/levels.

Gerald, Tony is right, you can go to levels and adjust the midtone slider to your liking.
