Exposure and colors look right on the money to me.... BG is wonderful, but the OOF limb in the front bothers me just a little. I might even lighten up his right side a tad too. I think I saw him on his way up to see you. :-) Bob

    Filomena:

I like Grosbeaks, and enjoyed seeing yours.

Nice background, sharp, nice head angle. I agree with Bob about the OOF branch in front.
It might have been interesting to have tried a larger aperture to reduce your DOF to blur it a bit more.

One small point that you can easily fix has to do with the whites. I was struck by the grey cast to the breast feathers. I set the white point on the brightest breast feathers, which cleaned up the whites.

    Keep them coming!

Fil, great exposure and sharpness, nice background, You could
burn the branch(make it darker) that would help.. the bird looks
kinda beatup, so the subject bird is less than desireable. Your shot
    is very nice.

Too bad about the front OOF perch, and the main perch is broken off rather bluntly. I also agree about the subject looking a little ratty. Although Randy's repost looks good and does indeed brighten the whites I am OK with your original exposure globally...perhaps passing over some of the whites with the dodge tool set at about 8% opacity would have made a nice impact without affecting the rest of the image. While you are at it you could do the same on the cheek but with the burn tool (to darken it).

    Fil:

Daniel made an excellent point. Because I wanted to show the effect of setting the white point, which is a global adjustment, I did alter the entire image. The negative side of that was it probably made the OOF branch worse because it became brighter.

I went back and did a local adjustment of the whites and the cheek.

This is certainly truer to your original image, with just the local improvements.
I was trying to make a helpful point on the original repost, but didn't watch the global impact carefully enough.

    Thanks Daniel.

Fil, Was this at a feeder set-up?

BTW, this is a young male (from last year) still molting. The brownish feathers that make hiim look so scruffy are juvenile feathers.

Thanks for the info on the young male.
    This was off my deck.
Bought your book and CD three weeks go and I am enjoying them both very much. Lots of great detail on the CD.
My husband bought them for me for Mothers Day.

YAW. Smart husband. :) :) :) Did you choose and set up the perch that the bird is sitting on?

I'll work on finding a better perch. The OOF branch in the front is distracting.
I prefer being out in the woods but this can be fun and challenging as well.

I Fil, I will try again:

Yes I set up the perch. I was shooting through a sliding door on my deck.

Thanks Fil, Best to re-read the section in ABP II on selecting pleasing perches. You are right about the one that you chose....
