Default LBJ beauty, the Clay-colored Sparrow.

LBJ = "Little Brown Jobs" = Sparrows. This weekend I got my first succesful photographs of this locally uncommon species. I tried unsuccesfully last year but they were much too skittish, and also unresponsive to audio. This year is different though, at least for one individual, as it readily comes in for great opportunities. The habitat this one is found in is predominantly grassy areas with a small selection of low brush and trees, thus affording great eye level action and ultra smooth and uniform BGs. A quick scout of the area for an adequate perch and BG...and start working the subject :-)

Canon 40D + 100-400L @400mm, aperture priority, manual exposure, 1/320s., f/7.1, ISO 640, +0.7 EC, natural bright overcast light, handheld, slight crop for composition.

    Daniel:

Excellent exposure, DOF and head angle. Normally I would say the perch is a bit big for this guy, but since you got him to prop himself just so on the little snag with his left leg, I guess its Ok. :):)

    Nice background.

    Very nice.

Excellent Daniel. I like the pose and detail. Constructive input would be to remove some noise from the BG.

Very nice setup and results, Daniel. I like the spread-legged pose and the over-the-shoulder look. Good exposure, sharpness, comp, and background. Well done.

Great light, details, perch, BG and eye contact. This is a species I still have to find.

Great shot of a not too easy bird to spot, nevertheless to photograph.
Great exposure and DOF, I actually like the perch even though it is on the large side.
Come to think of it, any perch with lichen, moss etc. looks great even if it is large since
it adds texture and a bit of composition element. Too bad the upper part is not
    covered with lichen too.

In any case great image of not too often seen bird.

Congratulations on getting an image of this elusive bird!

Lovely sharpness and eye contact. The BG is killer. Those lichens on the perch adds to it, but I'm afraid the perch is a little big for the bird.

Daniel, cool pose, with the splayed legs. Stunning light, exposure, and detail. This is nice and sharp, and what a great OOF BG. I would maybe take a bit off the bottom, at the underside of the perch.

I love sparrows even though they can be a challenge to ID. Their frustration for IDing is more than made up for their curious, spunky nature when photographing. That said.....this is lovely. Simple.....perfect for this sparrow which I'm fond of as well as great perch, eye contact and BG. I'm headed to Michigan next week and this is one that I always look for. Well done.

Super BG and nice pose! Congrats on getting this "LBJ". I was out this past weekend and came across a pod of three or four of them... will have to go back and work them after seeing your nice image.

Lovely pose, perch, light, BG as already mentioned. Only suggestion would be to mask back the sharpening on the perch, especially the edge above the sparrow's back. Great job, Dan.

    Daniel,

Not much I can add. Great work with the EF 100- 400 mm f/4.5 - 5.6 L zoom. This is most excellent and really cute..
