Not too often do you have the opportunity to photograph a nest from 50 feet up. Challenging side lighting but this was the best angle or it would have been a long fall down.

Manual, MKIII, EF 500, 1/640, f/9, ISO 640, fill flash at -3. Removed one little twig right of the chicks neck. Considering eliminating the grayish spots as well.

    Mike:

The chick is great, nice head angle too. I would tone down the whites on the adults neck and the foreground.

There is quite a pronounced repeating pattern in the background, almost like a fence out of focus.

Might crop down a bit from the top.

Thanks for sharing this fun image.

    Mike:

I had a minute before toddling off to bed, so took the liberty of a couple tweaks.

1)Toned down neck on parent and whites in foreground
    2)Brightened the chick
3)Did a gaussian blur on background to eliminate the pattern
4)Lowered the contrast of entire image except the adults eyes
    5)Cropped the top a bit

Just some options for you. You got to tells some more of the back story here!

The chick could use some more work, I am not happy with it, but because it is in a shadow from the adult, didn't want to go overboard.

Great eye contact from the parent, and like the behaviour of the chick. Lovely feather detail on the parent, and agree with Randy regarding the whites, and the BG.
