Wargaming,(battles with model soldiers) besides photography has been a passion of mine for many years. All figures and terrain are either hand painted or hand made. I have done the photography for numerous rule books in the hobby. The rules govern movement, firing, morale etc. The scenarios are created either after historical battles or non historical. The figures available today range from ancient times to world war 2 and everything in between. A huge game I've done, not too long ago, is the Battle of Gettysburg(2nd day) There were over 3000 figures used in the game. Due to the hobby I've become an avid student of military history.
Dave, I can't believe each piece was made by hand -that is incredible!! And is beautifully done! You must have some patience!!! That must take alot of time to position those soldiers and buildings just right. Do you re-create from books and drawings or are there field guides made for just this ?
Hi Denise, Actually the figures are lead but they are all primed and hand painted. These buildings are made out of resin and hand painted. I have many buildings from different periods that were handmade. The redoubt(where the guns are positioned) is totally handmade. For historical battles there are maps that tell me the troop dispositions and terrain. At times we have created scenarios(not based on history) but give army strengths and victory conditions. We also create our own maps for terrain. This picture is a small section of the battlefield
where there are close to 400 figures. Your right! It does take some patience...
Thanks Dave !!! That is on impressive and exciting Hobby !!! btw was just reading about Little Round Top Oats sure put up a good fight and almost made it !!! .... read on a regular basis !!!
Hi Alfred, The fight for Little Round Top was certainly "a near run thing" as they said back then. If the Confederates were able to roll up the Union flank it could have changed the whole complexion of the battle. I've walked the battlefield on 3 different occasions and could still go back....
Thanks Dave for this incredible image and all the exciting history that goes with it. You are definitely a man of many talents and this was most interesting to me. Thanks so much for sharing your passion with us.
This is so cool, Dave! Sounds like a very interesting hobby. My brothers are avid students of military history as well. They have a lot of paper soldiers that they use to fight battles.
